Last year, a group of French museum Community Managers partnered with Twitter for the #MuseumWeek event. The event uses Twitter to celebrate culture and increase engagement.
While the first #MuseumWeek took place in European museums only, the 2015 event is taking place worldwide. Using Twitter for conversation, #MuseumWeek gives participants a chance to participate in #MuseumWeek through different themes with associated hashtags for each day. According to the event’s press release, the goals for 2015 are to roll-out the event on a global scale, and to encourage engagement to a broader population by letting them participate in a fun and unique way.
The #MuseumWeek Real-Time Digital Art Project
#MuseumWeek features a real-time worldwide art project. A responsive website created for the event is generating art by using data to generate artwork. By clicking on the map, users can narrow down to specific locations to find the unique artwork for a each participating museum.
For examples, I clicked on the United States, then New York, then continued to narrow down, until I landed on the artwork for the Fraunces Tavern Museum. The digital art which has been generated continues to move and change. The composition is based on the colors in the account’s Twitter profile picture. Each sphere represents a museum tweet, each line is a #MuseumWeek hashtag. The website has incorporated Twitter cards, so that the art can be shared easily on Twitter. On the Twitter card the artwork moves like a short video.
The artwork will be deployed on touch screens in Paris museums, which each museum showing their own generated art.
